I’ve noticed that people are quite cynical about such articles as most of them tell you to disable features. The aim of the article is not to tell you to disable features on your iPhone, but the purpose is to provide you information about the various settings that are available, so you can disable the features that you don’t use as it would help in extending your iPhone’s battery life. I will promise you that you will learn something new that will help you extend your iPhone X’s battery life whether you are a long time iPhone user or a new iPhone user.


Settings Expectations

Before we proceed further giving you tips on how to improve battery life, we think it is important to know how much battery life your new iPhone is expected to deliver, so you can gauge for yourself if you should be concerned about battery life. Below is the iPhone X battery life from the tech specs page on Apple’s website.

It is important to understand that your battery life will vary as per your usage, so if you listen to your music locally from the Music app and not stream off LTE/3G/Wi-Fi, your battery life would last much longer.
You can check the battery usage and standby time since the last full charge via the Settings app under the Time since last full charge section (Settings > Battery).

Usage is the amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge. The phone is awake when you’re on a call, using email, listening to music, browsing the web, or sending and receiving text messages, or even during certain background tasks such as auto-checking email.

Battery Percentage

Unlike previous generation iPhones, in the case of iPhone X, there is no setting for enabling battery percentage in the status bar. Because of the notch, there’s not enough space on the right edge of the screen to put up the battery percentage. So now it’s hidden behind the Control Center. And to see it here, you don’t need to enable any setting.

On your iPhone X, swipe down from the top-right part of the screen – the right ear next to the notch. This will bring the Control Center. But the way Control Center animates, you see the top items first and fairly quickly. At at the top, you’ll find status bar icons that couldn’t fit next to the notch. The first of which is the battery percentage.
Now that you know how much battery life you should expect and you can track it with the battery percentage indicator, check these 10 tips to help you manage and improve battery life on your shiny new iPhone:

1. Identify Battery Hogs

The first step in fixing the battery problems is to understand battery usage. In iOS 8 Apple added the naming and shaming feature, which gives you a breakdown of battery usage by apps. Apple has made some improvements to this feature in iOS 9. It now gives you the amount of time the app was used and the amount of time it was running in the background. You can use that information to identify the battery hogs.

How to find battery usage on your iPhone

  • Launch the Settings app
  • Tap on Battery

This will show you all the apps and internal services like Home & Lock screen that are consuming battery on your iPhone. By default, it shows you the battery hogs in the last 24 hours. You can also check the apps that are consuming battery in the last 7 days by tapping on the Last 7 Days tab as you can see in the screenshot above. You can also tap the clock icon to the right on Last 4 days to find out how much time you’ve used the apps, and how much time the apps have been running in the background.

Identifying battery hogs

The battery usage provides you information about how much battery is consumed by various apps and services on your device. It is important to mention here that an app with a high percentage battery usage does not necessarily mean it is a battery hog. It could be because you were using it a lot, or if it was running in the background to upload or download content.

The apps that should be a concern are ones that show up on top of power consumption list even though you haven’t been using them. iPhone will also tell you what activity that could have resulted in battery consumption such as Background activity in case of the Mail app in the screenshot above.

What next

If you’ve identified an app that is draining battery life on your device, here are some of the things you can do to extend your iPhone’s battery life, especially if it is a third-party app:
  • If you can live without the app then the best thing to do is delete the app.
  • While iOS takes care of suspending apps in the background, it’s likely that some apps wake up in the background to fetch content off the network. You may want to force close apps like VoIP, navigation and streaming audio apps if you’re not using them as they’re known to drain battery life. It is important to note here that you should only close apps that you don’t want to use. It is a not a good practice to force close all apps, as that could have an adverse impact on battery life. Force close an app by swiping up from the Home indicator and stop when you see the animation. Now lift your finger and you’ll see all the apps in the horizontal list. Tap and hold on one of the cards and you’ll see red minus buttons in the top-left corner of each app card. Now, you can swipe up on any app to quit them.

  • If you want to use the app, then you should seriously consider disabling Location Services(Settings > Privacy > Location Services) and Background app refresh (Settings > General > Background App Refresh) features for the app as they can end up consuming battery life. We will cover it more detail next.

2. Location Services

When we install apps, they prompt us to give them access to various things such location etc., and we tend to blindly say yes. However, apps using location services can have a major impact on battery life. So you may want to review which apps should have access to your device’s location.
The best way to approach this is to first disable location services for all the apps. You can disable location services via the Settings app and navigate to Privacy > Location Services. After you’ve disabled location services for all apps, you identify which apps such as navigation apps should use location services and enabled them individually.

Use Location Only While Using the app

In iOS, you can allow apps to use Location Services only while using the app, so the apps don’t use battery consuming GPS feature all the time. This can be useful for apps like the App Store, which don’t need to be using location services all the time.

You can see which applications have recently used location services by going to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Apps that recently used your location have a compass like indicator next to them. Tap on the app, you should see the While Using the App, tap on it if you want the app to use location services only while using the app. This will ensure that the app will access your location only when it or one of its features are visible on the screen. As you can see below, iOS also tells you the App Store app is using location services to “find relevant apps nearby”.

But you may not find this option in all apps as developers need to explicitly add support for it.
If you’ve accidentally disabled location servicesfor an app that needs to use it, don’t worry, it will prompt you to give access to Location Services when you launch it.

3. Background App Refresh

iOS includes a smarter multitasking that lets apps fetch content in the background. Although Apple has a lot of optimizations in place to ensure that battery consumption is minimal, it’s possible that a poorly developed app could be using this feature, which could end up draining battery life. To disable Background App Refresh go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh > and turn it off for apps like Facebook or other apps that don’t absolutely need to be updated all the time. Background App Refresh is a great feature, but you don’t need it for every app.
I would strongly recommend turning it off for the Facebook app as it is known to drain battery life.
In iOS 11, you have the option to enable Background App Refresh only when you’re on a Wi-Fi network. You could see if selecting just Wi-Fi reduces the battery drain on your iPhone or you may want to turn off completely. It will also help in saving mobile data on your iPhone.

4. Use Dark Mode in Popular Apps

The iPhone X has a curved, bezel-less, OLED display. This is the first time Apple has incorporated an OLED panel in an iPhone. It didn’t just bring us smooth curves or vibrant colors. OLED also brings pure dark mode. You see, when a pixel is pure black, the OLED panel just doesn’t illuminate it. Which means that part of the display is turned off.
When apps switch out the white background with a black one, it looks like the content is basically floating on the screen. The edges of the phone just disappear. It looks damn cool. But there’s a practical benefit to using this dark mode as well. As the background pixels aren’t illuminated, you end up saving a lot of battery life on your iPhone X. Here are the list of popular apps in which you can enable dark mode to save iPhone X battery life.
If you’ve jailbroken your iPhone X with Electra Jailbreak, then you can also use the EclipseX jailbreak tweak that brings system-wide dark mode to iPhone X. Jailbreakers have reported improved battery life after installing EclipseX.

5. Use Low Power Mode

If your device is running low on battery, and you still have some time to get to a power source, then you could enable the all-new Low Power mode by going to Settings > Battery and tapping on the toggle. Low Power Mode temporarily reduces power consumption by turning off or reducing mail fetch, background app refresh, automatic downloads, and some visual effects. Apple states that Low Power Mode mode can improve battery life by an additional 3 hours.
You will also get a prompt to enable Low Power Mode when you hit 20% battery remaining, and will automatically disable it when battery remaining crosses 80%.

6. Place your iPhone Facedown

iOS includes a facedown detection feature, which makes use of the ambient light sensor to ensure the display doesn’t light up when you receive a Notification when you place the iPhone facedown. The feature along with other refinements helps in increasing battery life by an additional hour as it turns off the display when not in use. So when you place your iPhone on the table, you should place it facedown to conserve battery life. Please note the Facedown Detection feature is available only on iPhone 5s or later devices.

7. Push Email

Push email can be a primary cause of battery drain on some devices. To identify if your email is Push or Fetch, launch the Settings app, and navigate to Mails, Contacts and Calendars > Fetch New Data. You need to check if the email account has been set as Push, Fetch or Manual.
Push ensures that you get an instant notification when you get a new email, whereas Fetch will look for new data 15 minutes, every 30 minutes, hourly or when you launch the Mail app (manually). You may want to disable Push email temporarily for your email accounts to see if it improves battery life.
Alternatively, if you use multiple email accounts then you may want to disable Push for email accounts where you don’t need to get an instant notification for new email, and switch to Fetch. The higher the fetch interval, the better it is for battery life, so you can set it appropriately based on the importance of the email account.

8. General Tips

Please note that the tips under section are to highlight areas where you could disable things that are not applicable to you so you can extend battery life. We are not recommending or advising you to disable features just for battery life, as then there would be no point in using smartphones like the iPhone.

Widgets

The Widgets in the Lock Screen and Notification Center (when you swipe left) includes widgets for Stock and Weather and any other third-party Notification Center widget you may have added. You should review the list and remove the widgets that you don’t want to ensure they don’t consume battery life unnecessarily as some of them could be using Location services.

Turn off Dynamic Wallpapers

Dynamic wallpapers bring subtle animations to the home and the lock screen. Unfortunately, the animations take up CPU cycles and consume more battery. So if you have set a dynamic wallpaper, and you’re having battery issues, go to Settings > Wallpaper > Choose Wallpaper where you can go to either Stills or your set an image from your photo library as your wallpaper. iPhone X also allow you to set Live Photos as wallpapers, but it should have an impact on battery life as they come to life only when you use 3D Touch to firmly press on the wallpaper.

Disable Motion effects, parallax

Apple added a number of animations and physics-based effects to the interface in iOS 7 to help users understand the layered elements in the UI. Some of these effects even access gyroscopic data, which contributes further to battery drain. You can disable these motion effects by going to Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion and turn on the switch. However, please note that enabling Reduce Motion will disable the effects in the Messages app.

Other tips

  • If you hardly use Bluetooth then turn it off (Settings -> General -> Bluetooth)
  • Set Auto-Lock interval so that your iPhone will turn off more quickly after a period of inactivity. To set the Auto-Lock interval, launch the Settings app, tap on General and then Auto-Lock and set the auto-lock interval to either 30 seconds, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 minutes.
  • You’re probably aware that using Wi-Fi drains iPhone’s battery, but perhaps you didn’t know that one of the most intensive processes that iPhone’s Wi-Fi chip has to do is search for available network. So if this happens in regular intervals, it’s going to have a noticeable impact on your battery. To disable this feature, launch the Settings app, tap on Wi-Fi, and tap on the On/Off toggle for Ask to Join Networks to disable it. Please note that by disabling this feature, your iPhone will join known Wi-Fi networks automatically, but you will have to manually select a network if no known networks are available. Note: It is disabled by default.
  • Dimming the screen helps to increase battery life. You can either lower the default screen brightness based on your preference or turn on Auto-Brightness to allow the screen to adjust its brightness based on current lighting conditions. Launch the Settings app, scroll down and tap on Brightness & Wallpaper and set Auto-Brightness to On. Note: Apple enables it by default.
  • Turn off Location services for the following System System services: Diagnostics & Usage, Setting Time Zone, Location Based iAds (Settings -> Privacy -> Location Services -> System Services).

9. Troubleshooting

Hard Reset Your iPhone X

To hard reset your iPhone X, quickly press and release the Volume Up button, then quickly press and release the Volume Down button. Press and hold the Side button (Sleep/Wake button) till you see the Apple logo.

Resetting Network Settings

Reset network settings by tapping Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings. This will reset all network settings, including passwords, VPN, and APN settings.

Battery Maintenance

Apple advices users to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down). So if you haven’t done it already, it may be a good time to do it. Power cycling your device helps in recalibrating the battery indicator more accurately.

10. Restore iPhone as New

This is not ideal but the last resort. If you’ve setup your iPhone by restoring from backup then the battery life problems could be due to some issue with the backup. Try to restore your iPhone (Settings -> General -> Reset -> Erase All Content And Settings) and set it up as a new iPhone (not from the backup). But before you erase all the contents and settings, take a backup of your iPhone using iTunes or iCloud, or selectively take a backup of your photos and videos using Dropbox or Google+.

Windows 10 hiding scroll bars is disable

The default behavior hides scroll bars automatically in Windows. While that feature is limited to (mostly) Windows Store applications and not desktop apps, it affects all users as native apps like Settings use the system as well.
Microsoft uses the term hiding and that is correct as the scroll bar is hidden automatically when a window becomes inactive.
Activation, e.g. clicking on the window to make it the foreground window, does not display the full scroll bar but a smaller one. Only when you interact with the scroll bar is the full scroll bar displayed.
While some users may find the feature useful, as it may display more information in a program window thanks to the extra bits of width for content, others may dislike it because it may be more difficult to interact with the scroll bar.
You need to move the mouse over the scroll bar area and wait for a moment to expand it from thin to full, and when you move the mouse away it goes back to the thin version automatically.

Disable Windows 10's hide scroll bars feature

Microsoft, thankfully, added an option to Windows 10 to disable the functionality. Here is how you do that on your system:
  1. Use the keyboard shortcut Windows-I to open the Settings application. You can alternatively select Start > Settings if you prefer to use the mouse.
  2. Go to Ease of Access > Display.
  3. Find the "Automatically hide scroll bars in Windows" preference and set it to off.
  4. You should notice that scroll bars return to the big state automatically and that Windows 10 does not hide them anymore on the system once you have made the change in the Settings application.
    You can restore the status quo at any time by setting the preference to on again in the Settings application.

    Closing Words

    The new visual tweak to hide scroll bars on Windows 10 gives applications a bit of extra space for content. While that is always appreciated, having to wait a short moment before the full scroll bar is displayed may not be appealing to some users of the operating system.
    Those can disable the functionality to restore full scroll bars across the system. Some users may not come across hidden scroll bars that much as it depends on whether they use Store apps or native apps regularly.

Edge Computing — computing that takes place outside of the data center, closer to where data are being created — is quickly becoming one of the hottest trends in the tech sector.
Data are being created faster than it can be managed, so artificial intelligence, smart cars, manufacturing plants, cities and other “smart” objects, networks and systems will require Edge Computing to process, store, and analyze it. Why? Because the alternative — pushing every bit of data to the cloud for processing, analysis and storage, then waiting for packets of information, policy and commands to come back to the device or network — is both untenable and inefficient. By performing these functions on the Edge, devices, networks and systems can react in real time to critical needs, and can operate reliably even when their connection to Cloud services become compromised.
Simply put, the potential of the Internet of Things, Machine Learning, AI, and even the commercialization of 5G cellphone technology cannot be fully realized without a massive global deployment of Edge computing capabilities.
Consumers may not recognize Edge products, but they will see its impact when they receive a discount offer for their favorite restaurant just as they pass by, for example, or in their car’s improved collision-avoidance decisions.
It’s already big business: The global market for Edge Computing was worth $8 billion in 2017 and should reach $20.5 billion by 2026, growing at a compound annual rate of 11%, according to estimates from Stratistics MRC. Other analysts say the market is smaller and could be worth just $6 billion in the next few years. The gap is primarily due to how different analysts decide what is edge computing equipment versus other categories such as the Internet of Things and Machine Learning infrastructure.
I believe the Edge will be a critical growth area for six tech giants in particular. They are already leveraging their growing technology portfolios to take advantage of the gold rush for Edge computing dominance. Here is a breakdown of how these opportunities are unfolding:
1.Intel: Almost all Edge Computing servers from Dell, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Cisco and others will be powered by IntelINTC, +2.25% Intel’s Xeon D-2100 processor was designed with Edge applications in mind, so it will benefit from Edge deployments regardless of the hardware selected.
2.Dell: This company DVMT, +1.09% on the brink of its return to the stock market, has long been pushing a message of not just IoT, but an Internet of Intelligent Things, arguing that the “things” that create real value have embedded intelligence and the ability to transmit data that can be acted upon. To realize this, Dell has committed more than $1 billion to R&D around what it calls “the Intelligent Edge.” This, plus a portfolio of market-ready Edge hardware like their “Edge Gateway Series,” makes it a promising contender in this category.
3.Hewlett Packard Enterprise: This companyHPE, +1.92% may arguably be the most bullish of all those pursuing an aggressive Edge strategy. Its product set, dubbed “Edgeline,” is designed for robust computing in harsh environments such as inside a manufacturing plant, the closet of a parking garage, on an oil rig 50 miles off the Gulf of Mexico, and has the added advantage of having been early to market. As a result, it has already been well received by enterprises and municipalities that jumped on Edge Computing early. This translates into a healthy install base, real-world use cases, and a pretty decent beachhead upon which to base a next push. HPE also acquired data networking giant Aruba, whose portfolio is a natural fit in a complex Edge ecosystem, especially in the Enterprise area.
4.SAP: In 2017, SAP SAP, +1.37% SAP, +0.33%SAP, +0.31% the world’s largest customer-management-relationship software firm, launched Leonardo, a smart digital ecosystem that drives its impressive machine learning, IoT and other disruptive technologies.
SAP’s role in Edge will be a little different than the other five companies mentioned here. I anticipate that SAP will look to capitalize on the uptick in software resources that will be required as Edge computing puts increased demands on analytics tools. While other software players will likely try to pursue the same opportunity, SAP touches nearly 90% of all transactions around the planet, positioning it perfectly to benefit from growth at the Edge more than any other CRM software vendor.
5.Cisco: While most technology companies use the common “Edge” vernacular, CiscoCSCO, +2.37%   prefers “Fog.” This terminology is used to describe the critical relationship between the edge and the cloud. Regardless of your chosen taxonomy, Edge, Fog, Cloud, and everything in between is just a vast, layered ecosystem. And regardless of how much Edge (or Fog) computing ultimately eat into the Cloud, I believe the two will work in tandem. Cisco has launched its Edge Series that has been built with integration to its traditional UCS Data Center line in mind. From where I sit, growth at the Edge will require growth in data centers as well, and Cisco seems poised to make the best of that symbiotic growth between Edge, Fog, and Cloud.
6.IBM: We’ve been hearing about Watson for a long time, and IBM has made massive strides in artificial intelligence to benefit all sorts of customers. This depends on massive amounts of analytics computing power to quickly turn piles of data into insights, especially at scale. That means that IBM is almost certain to leverage data, computing power and insights collected, processed, and shared from the Edge.

iOS 11.4.1 is here and my Upgrade Guide has already explained why it’s an essential update. That said, beneath the surface, Applehas made one crucial change and the nasty surprise is it has already been compromised...
‘Great Secret Features’ and ‘Nasty Surprises’ are my regular columns investigating the best features / biggest problems hidden behind the headlines.

It was omitted from the official release notes, but with iOS 11.4.1 Apple quietly introduced an enhanced version of its ‘USB Restricted Mode’. This was meant to counteract a Grayshift hack which automatically enters passcodes via the Lightning port until the correct code is found and a device is unlocked. But it turns out Apple’s enhancement was half-baked.

What Apple did in iOS 11.4.1 was decrease the time until an iPhone or iPad’s Lightning port is disabled from one week to one hour after the last successful unlock. But security specialist ElcomSoft discovered this time limit will not start if the Lightning port is used at any point within that hour, so all you have to do to stop the one-hour window closing indefinitely is connect any USB accessory.
ElcomSoft even recommends the perfect accessory to do this: Apple’s own Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter which costs $39 and has passthrough power so Grayshift can connect directly to the device at the same time.
Who Is It For?
Like previous iOS 11 releases, iOS 11.4.1 is compatible with the iPhone 5S or later, iPad mini 2 or later and 6th generation iPod touch or later.
If you own a compatible iPhone, iPad or iPod touch you should automatically be prompted to install the new update. If not, you can trigger it manually by navigating to Settings > General > Software Update. Apple iOS 12 beta testers, you will first have to unenroll your device for the update to appel.
